Octave Day of Epiphany!

The Midnight Office, or Night Vigil, has 12 readings and 12 responsories, amid the 12 psalms, and 3 canticles, and over 12 Antiphons that are sung (the 15 Gradual Psalms, and in some cases, the 30 Psalms, are sung before the Night Vigil begins).

The Night Vigil is divided into three Nocturns. Each Nocturn has 6 Psalms; after each Nocturn, 4 readings a read, with 4 responsories each.

The Western Orthodox cursus should consist of Vespers, then Compline, the Gradual Psalms, and then the Night Vigils, with Lauds (Orthros) chanted in the morning, before dawn. The Night Vigil by itself can be up to 3 hours, when done with all the appropriate prolix chant; if done without the prolix chant it can be 2.5 hrs. Depending upon timing, some monasteries and parishes will sing Vespers, Compline and Vigils all together; others will sing Vigils together with Lauds, in the early morning, thus forming what is often called Matins (which is a combination of Vigils and Lauds).

Here are the 12 Readings and Responsories that will be used for tonight's Night Vigil, which will celebrate the great Octave Day of Epiphany, or Theophany. The 8th day after the Feast is celebrated with only less solemnity than the feast itself, for example, it has no tropes for the Proper Chants. For those interesed, the proper invitatory, psalms, and antiphons are here on pg. 112

Hispanic Rite First Sunday in Advent

Ok. This is mainly the Rites of Orthodox England, and thus, things pertain to Orthodox England, but, we do appreciate greatly the contributions of the saints of other lands, especially Hispania (modern day Spain and Portugal), and Gaul. Thus, here is a link to the translation of the First Sunday in Advent for the Hispanic rite (sometimes called the 'Mozarabic rite'). They have Six Sundays, so, since we are using the Old (Julian) Calendar, their Advent liturgically became about 3 weeks ago, while our First Sunday in Advent (using the 'English' rite) begins this upcoming Sunday.

On the Athanasian 'Creed' Contained in the Greek Horologion and the old Western Orthodox services

"What of the Athanasian Creed, which originally contained the Filioque, that is
now present in Orthodox Horologia?"

But, did it originally contain the Filioque (really the et filio is the word used in the 'filioqued' text)? Or perhaps did St. Athanasius really compose it, or was it composed by Latin friend who could write eloquently in that tongue? I know that 'modern' scholars of recent centuries have begun to question it, but, I thought about this matter not long ago when I finished reading St. Theodoret's "Ecclesiastical History" ; in this he sets out the Confessional Letter and Decree of Pope St. Damasus (4th century) and this decree looks very 'Athanasian':

1st, notice what it says about the Holy Ghost:

"If any one deny that the Holy Spirit is truly and absolutely of the Father, and that the Son is of the divine substance and very God of God, let him be anathema."

Now, notice how it explicitly distinguishes the Holy Ghost to be truly AND ABSOLUTELY of the Father. We can say that the Holy Ghost is 'relatively' of the Father and Son (like He is called the Spirit of Christ) because he has a temporal procession or mission of being sent by the Father through the Son; this everyone acknowledges. The Holy Ghost proceeds from the Father through the Son in a purely temporal sense, in patristic language; that the Holy Ghost proceeds from both in the sense of being sent in time is believed. As you know, the Greek term used in the Creed to denote the Procession is ekporeuomenon, which is the same word Christ uses. This, when translated into the Latin creed was the somewhat ambiguous 'procedentem'. St. Jerome's Vulgate conveys the same ambiguity with this same term when refering to the temporal and eternal procession. There apparently wasn't a reason in St. Jerome's mind to use different words (since there was not a filioquist teaching at the time, except in the mind of St. Augustine, perhaps). Thus, however, St. Damasus, seems to be implying by the word 'absolutely' that the Holy Ghost is in an absolute sense (that is, the origination of His Person by Spiration) from the Father! and not a mention of the Son involved! Why? Because none were filioquist!

However, I think it should also be mention, that if you read all of his decree it has extreme similarities to the Athanasian Creed, and even uses the term 'substance' in the Latin (the English I think is essence). But, St. Athanasius did spend years in Exile in the West, when he was exiled there (for his protection) by St. Constantine, and, I believe in later exiles by Constantius? He knew several Popes, and he knew St. Hilary of Poiters. In all this time, are we to believe he didn't learn Latin to participate in Mass??? Or that he, who was an intellectual genius, would have ignored this? Of course he didn't write much in Latin, because Greek was the linguag franca. However, I think the Decree of St. Damasus, and that writings of the other Fathers who St. Athanasius knew, bare the stamp of his teachings. Even the Decree of St. Damasus, as early as the late 370s, was clearly going into the Christological issues that are reflected in the Athansian Creed (such as the Incarnation, Godhood taking manhood into Himself, the Incarnate Son having a body and rational soul, as opposed to a monophysite or apollonarian view), and this is similar to the Quicumque Vult! Thus, I think we can see at the very least, that an Athanasian Creed without 'et filio' was there, as well as by the early decree of St. Damasus making this clear in his theological exposition. I opt for an indeed very early view of the Creed. If not St. Athanasius, who while in his very long exiles in Italy and France could have dictated letters containg this, then perhaps St. Damasus, or at most St. Vincent compiling similar decrees based upon the writings and decrees of St. Athanasius, and thus, originally without a filioque.

To answer another point, the Creed of Athanasius does not contain the Greek 'homousion' because it is Latin (and this absence of a Greek word in a Latin creed is supposed to be one of the proferred evidences against its authenticity?)! The Latin Nicene Creed just contains 'consubstantia' for 'homousios'; indeed, only the Hispanic/Mozarabic Nicene Creed among all the Latin creeds has the Greek 'homousios' instead of the Latin 'consubstantia'! Thus, the argument put forth that a Latin language Creed adopts the Latin Nicene Creed language for the Athanasian supplemental hymn creed is an argument against its early Athanasian (or proto-Athanasian) origin is ludicrous! St. Athanasius would use 'substantia' once he learned of the fact that 'homousios' was translated as such.

Furthermore, I believe the fact that we have the Decree of Pope St. Damasus, and the Alexandria Synodal decrees of St. Athanasius, which speak explicitly of God the Word taking Manhood into himself of a rational body and soul, and becoming both Perfect Man and God, while retaining Unity of Personhood and Duality of Natures, would demonstrate, that at an early date the 'Chalcedonian' view was the view of Rome and the early Athanasian Alexandria which was in firm theological alliance with the Holy Orthodox Roman Church. Furthermore, the term 'Orthodox' itself, was being used by the early 4th century Church, as evidence by St. Athansius ad St. Hosius using it.

Thus, we see that all the essential terms are there by the 350-360s (with St. Athansius life) to write this creed. Therefore, perhaps it is not best to give up the farm yet on it having been in an original form without the interpolation.
